    The Importer -Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which is mandatory for Exports or Imports. No person shall make any import or export except under an IEC Number granted by the DGFT. In case of import or export of services or technology, the IEC shall be required only when the service or technology provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or is dealing with specified services or technologies.

    Import Export Code (also known as IEC code) is a 10 digit identification number that is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Department of Commerce, Government of India. It is also known as Importer Exporter Code. Companies and businesses must obtain this code to start a business that deals with import and export in the Indian Territory. It is not possible to deal with export or import business without this IEC code.

    FAQs

    1. Is IEC is only required for goods?

    It is assumed that IEC is only for import or export of goods. But it is necessary for both goods as well as services. Import or export of services is an international transaction. So any person providing services beyond the boundaries of India has to make online IEC application.

    2. Are there any renewal and returns in IEC?

    As per recent changes made by DGFT via notification no. 58/2015-2020 dated 12th February,2021 all IEC holders are required to renew/update their registration every year electronically on or before 30th June of the year. If renewal is not done within the stipulated time than an IEC will be de-activated.

    3. Is IEC is required for import or export of goods for personal use?

    IEC is mandatory only for business and commercial purpose. There is no need for IEC to import or export goods for personal use. Hence one can import or export goods without any registration for personal use.

    4.How many IEC can one get?

    Authority will issue only One IEC against a single PAN (i.e. One PAN = One IEC). Any proprietor can have only single IEC number. Incase there are more than one IEC’s allotted to a proprietor, the same may be surrendered to the Regional Office for Cancellation.

    5. Is there a need to file returns for IEC?

    The IEC code is required at the time of exporting or importing or receiving or paying payments. There is no need to file returns for IEC as there are no post registration compliances.

    6. What does a business owner who wishes to start Import Export Trade needs to know before going global?

    It is important for the business owner who wishes to engage in Import Export trade to be thorough and know his product and service perfectly. The business owner must know what makes his products unique. He must analyze the market of the target country and must evaluate the pros and cons carefully of going there including an estimation of the risks and the costs involved in it.

    7. Do government departments need to obtain IEC Code?

    The Central and State Government do not require obtaining IEC registration. A fixed number is allotted to them which is used for any such transactions.
